Spotlight: Andy Prock

Tell us about you and your role at your library.

Ten years ago I began working at Myrin Library as the Metadata Librarian, cataloging book and media purchases, gift collections and rare books.  Over the years my role has expanded to include digitization of library special collections and archival materials and management of the institutional repository.  My current position is challenging and exciting!  It is no small task to preserve and make accessible 150+ years of Ursinus College history as well as student and faculty achievement.

What is something you have experienced that has inspired you in your work?

I am always inspired by the students I have met over the years, whether through advising, teaching or employing!  I haven’t had time to advise lately, but it means a lot to me to be available to first-year students who sometimes need extra support during the difficult transition to college life.  In the classroom, it’s a great feeling when a student makes a connection or wants to dig deeper into something they’ve discovered in the repository.  And I am forever grateful to my student assistants for their work ethic and willingness to take on the seemingly endless number of projects we have in the library!

What is a personal favorite item or feature of your library’s space or collections?

The thing I enjoy most about the space in Myrin Library is the student art collection that can be found on the three main floors of the building.  Works are selected each year from the Annual Student Art Exhibition to be added to the collection.  The wide range of subject matter and materials creates a vibrant atmosphere and meshes well with the sculptures featured around campus from the Berman Museum of Art.

What is a favorite activity or place to spend time when not at work?

I enjoy traveling with family to new places and finding unexpectedly amazing food!  I also like to scope out any used bookstores along the way.  I know that verges on being a busman’s holiday, but sometimes it works out perfectly.  For example, on a Niagara Falls trip, I had an incredible vegan egg salad sandwich in a diner in Buffalo that was across the street from a well-stocked vintage comic book shop!
