Library Assistant for Access Services

Overview:

Landman Library is searching for a Library Assistant for Access Services to serve as the primary contact for library patrons seeking access to library collections and services in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends. This new, full-time position is responsible for providing a range of library access services including assisting patrons respectfully and efficiently, interpreting and enforcing library policies, responding to initial reference and research needs while effectively referring patrons to the appropriate supports, and maintaining a professional and strong service-oriented ethos at the circulation desk. This position also oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of library student employees. This role directly interacts with students, faculty, and staff and is a great opportunity for a service-oriented professional.

Responsibilities:

Access Services:

  • Taking direction from and supporting the Access Services and Outreach Librarian, oversees access services functions and the circulation desk, including patron access to library collections and library services, retrieving and shelving books, shelf reading and stacks maintenance, answering the phone, triaging reference questions and referring patrons where appropriate, and opening and closing the library building. – Establishes a professional and service-oriented atmosphere at the circulation desk.
  • Upholds library policies including access, quiet, circulation, food, and space use.
  • Supports the library website, including updating operating hours, access policies, hyperlinks, and other online content.

Supervision of Student Employees:

  • Hires and trains student employees for the circulation desk, including all aspects of patron services, use of the online catalog, shelving and shelf reading, and stacks maintenance.
  • Supervises student employees, providing ongoing feedback on job performance and continued training.
  • Manages the scheduling of student employees as well as payroll processing.

Building Access and Technology:

  • Supports the management of the physical library spaces, including signage, furniture, general supplies, and coordinates facility requests as needed.
  • Administers the library online space reservation system.
  • Acts as the primary resource for all questions and issues related to the use of public workstations, printers, scanning equipment, and other technology; provides initial troubleshooting/diagnosis of software and hardware problems; resolves problems or coordinates with IT staff for additional support as needed.

Integrated Library System:

  • Keeps current on integrated library system updates and trains student employees on new developments as appropriate.
  • Manages book hold requests and academic reserves.
  • Updates patron records as needed and coordinates with the Alumni Office.

Special Projects:

Assists with long-term projects from various departments in the library, including Collection Management, Scholarly Communication, Accessibility, and University Archives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of experience in a library or customer service role, preferably in an academic or research library, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • A strong commitment to customer service and library patron access.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and monitor the work of student employees, organize and prioritize the work of multiple workers, and ensure that tasks are performed consistently in a busy service environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate tactfully and effectively with a culturally diverse range of people with varied research and instructional needs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to compose original correspondence, reports, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to exercise initiative while working without close, immediate supervision and while working collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to handle complex work assignments and to solve or refer problems to appropriate staff effectively.
  • Excellent computer hardware and software skills, including expertise using Google Apps and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel), email, and Internet browsers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using online library catalogs, bibliographic databases, and patron-facing library services such as interlibrary loan and space reservations preferred.
