Librarian CJob Description Summary
Reporting to the Director of Data & Innovation Services at the Biotech Commons, this position is based at the Biotech Commons and is a member of the STEM Libraries Team, contributing to the division’s services and endeavors. The STEM Libraries include the Biotech Commons, Dental, Veterinary, Chemistry, and Math/Physics/Astronomy Libraries, as well as Engineering Library Services.The Bioinformatics Librarian will develop and maintain bioinformatics support services for basic and clinical research faculty, staff, and students at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM). Working with colleagues from across the Penn Libraries system, this position will also support those engaged in bioinformatics research at the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), the Schools of Dental and Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS).
Job Description
Responsibilities :
Serve as the primary liaison to the Institute for Biomedical Informatics, the Bioinformatic Core, and the Master of Biomedical Informatics program.
Provide reference, training, and consultation services on both free and commercial bioinformatics databases and tools including (but not limited to) Cytoscape, BioCyc, and NCBI.
Works closely with the Biotech Commons Collections Librarian to select, evaluate and promote bioinformatics and data resources in all formats (print, databases, datasets, images, etc.).
Provide outreach to interdisciplinary centers such as the forthcoming Gutmann Data Science Center.
Provide outreach to faculty and researchers at Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM), School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS)/computer science, Penn Dental and Veterinary Schools, and the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) who are engaged in bioinformatics research.
Create and maintain Bioinformatics LibGuides and documentation.
Keep apprised of the larger/broader informatics ecosystem at Penn and liaise with informatics colleagues across the university.
Collaborate with Penn Libraries Center for Research Data & Digital Scholarship staff on related research data services.
Work with the team of Biotech Commons librarians as part of the reference services rotation and other collaborations as appropriate.
Other projects/duties as assigned.Qualifications:
Required
Master’s degree or above in a field focused on bioinformatics, information science or data sciences – OR — MLIS equivalent with experience in bioinformatics.
Proficiency in one or more computer languages (e.g., R, SQL, Python, C++, Unix) and tools used in data and statistical analysis.
Demonstrated familiarity with databases and tools used in bioinformatics research.
Demonstrated knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, and terminology of a biomedical-related discipline and an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in that field.
Experience in teaching, training, and/or instruction
Excellent analytical, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.Preferred
Experience working in an academic research library
Experience with analysis of omics data using a programming language.
Experience in creating, and executing new programs or services.
Experience interest in developing expertise in data visualization.Application Requirement:
