Open Ed Week is coming up March 7-11. Activities and programs are happening worldwide and close to home. PALCI/ALPA is putting on a discussion table event on March 8th to share ideas about OER creation and implementation. Several large organizations (movements) to check out are:

    https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks
    https://openoregon.org/

The possibilities are endless and the opportunities immense. Open text books, open publishing, open pedagogy… It can be overwhelming to know where to start.

We are in the process of revising our LibGuides to improve our services. I just read Testing for Transition: Evaluating the Usability of Research Guides Around a Platform Migration. The students’ preference for the structure of the guides did not surprise me. I think we all appreciate clean, clear, and to the point. I was interested to learn how the students found the guides they needed and how this informs naming and subjects. Has anyone done a usability study for their LibGuides (formal or informal)? Can you share your insights?

We have a wall of student “profiles” tucked back in our reserves room. The students’ pictures, names, and responses to the beginning of the semester icebreaker question make up the core “profile.” Each month, we come up with a new question to engage students. I find it difficult to create cohesion because the students only work a few hours at a time. I am trying to figure out how to bring them together/reward them for a successful semester in Dec. I think food will encourage the most participation. Does anyone have additional ideas on this? Thanks 🙂
